The best pop videos don't need to make sense, and this visual slice of whateverything, self-directed by Grimes, is perfect in its arbitrary iconography. A gang of girls wielding medieval tools guns through the desert in an SUV ready for battle, while a Manga-raver heroine trolls the boulevards of Beverly Hills, possibly looking for sex or cocaine. Or perhaps she was a hologram stranded in the terrestrial plane from another dimension, ready to fight her way back to her home planet. Would it matter? There's a snake, a crook, a flail, and enough clever edits to keep it all exciting. It felt like a breakout moment for Grimes, in which the emerging artist fully embraced the ridiculousness it takes to compete on a bona fide pop level in 2012. She is, without challenge, this year's apocalyptic princess.
