FRIENDS AND COLLABORATORS ADAM GREEN AND BINKI SHAPIRO ARE SOULFULLY INTERTWINED, EVEN IF THEIR DEBUT JOINT EFFORT IS DECIDEDLY NOT FOR LOVERS

“Don’t use this album as an instruction book for love,” says Brooklyn-based artist, singer, and man-about-town Adam Green of his latest release with former Little Joy front woman Binki Shapiro. “It’s about a dysfunctional romance—one that ends when the nighttime stops bleeding, or when daytime starts to clot and coagulate.” The duo’s biting and deceptively harmonic rumination on a broken, decaying relationship is a folksy and somewhat old-fashioned sound with a late ’60s pop feel—at times reminiscent of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood’s psychedelic-infused kitch pop duets. Shapiro’s sleepy, smoky vocals and Green’s periodic plucking are the perfect vehicle for slightly off-kilter lyrics, including those about a “pity, pity love.”

The pair’s own relationship couldn’t be farther from the one their output envisions. “Adam and I sort of met randomly at a Mexican restaurant while our friends were having a midday margarita here in L.A.,” explains the waifish, Jane Birkin-esque Shapiro, from her home in Encino, California. “We just became best friends—he’s like a brother to me now.” Years later, Green joined Shapiro’s band, Little Joy, on tour in Brazil. Then last fall the 26-year-old singer-songwriter received a text from Green as she was boarding a plane, asking if she wanted to make an album together. “Writing the first song was a bit awkward, but once we got over that, we just sort of let the music guide us,” says Shapiro of their collaborative process. “We met every night at his apartment in New York, or mine—writing, shooting the shit, going out to eat, then writing again—and by the end we had something straightforward and maybe a little threatening, and we were bonded in a way that we weren’t before.”

Adam Green & Binki Shapiro is available January 29 from Rounder/Concord Records
