With the world as its jury, the Tribeca Film Festival Online voters decided: it is all about Lil Bub this year. Call it kitty kismet that VMagazine.com had the privilege of interviewing the star of this year’s award-winning documentary, voted Best Feature Film at the 2013 Tribeca Online Film Festival before the announcement was made. Yes indeed, we spoke to the one and only A-list feline fatale herself, who’s now even more famous than before, following her wildly celebrated silver screen debut in Lil Bub and Friendz.
This hipster-sly story follows Bub and her devoted yet chillaxed caretaker (Mike “The Dude” Bridavsky), across the country to meet other cat-lebrities—like Nyan Cat, Grumpy Cat, and the dearly departed Keyboard Cat—as well as a few aspiring hopefuls. Bub and Mike’s adventures run the gamut, from dropping in on a massively-attended outdoor cat video film festival, to checking out the horizon of the cat scene by crossing paths with the effervescent Ben Lashes, dubbed the “world’s first meme manager.” All the while, Mike rises to the challenge of taking care of his delicate charge—Lil Bub’s health is more than tricky at times, as is movingly shared in this tale of a dreamy kitty’s rise from runt to riches.
Having racked up millions of online fans through her Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, Bub works closely with Mike to maintain her connection to the adoring masses. Juliette Eisner, who co-directed Lil Bub & Friendz with Andy Capper, shared that Bub’s adorability is “other worldly;” she is an “alien-like creature that puts a spell on anyone who meets her.” Being used to fans and followers projecting their hopes and fantasies on her, both online and in real life, Bub knows how to shoot an arrow right through the heart of the most cynical of souls by way of a wide-eyed stare. Every great ingénue masters it—there’s no need to fluff up a fake profile or embellish a persona if you’re the real deal. And there’s a reason this one is known as “the most famous cat on the internet.”
A famous feline—real, animated, or otherwise—who do you look up to?
Lil Bub I look up into the sky to my space family back on my home planet. I miss them dearly.
Of the other cats who have internet fame (either your predecessors or the up-and-comers), which one is someone you could really befriend and why?
LB Honestly I would love to connect with the one they call the Grumpy Cat. Not because she too is famous, but because I feel we have a cosmic connection; and I think she may be the true yang to my yin.
Given your popularity, people feel they have intimate access to you. Can you share something they don't know about you?
LB While I am able to poop in my litter box on my own, my dude (Mike) has to periodically pee me by rubbing my belly. Otherwise I may pee randomly around the house.
If you could describe your perfect day, what would it be like?
LB Every day is a perfect day.
As for Mike B, when did you know you'd be BFFs?
LB I knew that Mike, my caretaker, my number one dude, would be my Best BFF forever the second he picked me up, looked me in the eyes, and dubbed me Bub. From that moment on it's been beard cleanings, fish parties and tender moments.
And Andy Capper, the film’s co-director?
LB Andy is a genuinely amazing dude that fills my heart with joy every time I see him.
What's the strangest and/or most remarkable interaction you've had with a human (i.e., an adoring fan who's approached you)?
LB People are often moved to tears of joy in my presence. This happens more often than you would think. Once a woman even dropped to her knees sobbing as soon as she entered the room I was in. This is not an exaggeration. She was a kind, wonderful woman.
Andy, how has Lil Bub changed your life?
Andy Capper I got some new friendz that I love.
Juliette, what was your first impression of Lil Bub? And what has been her most important essence to capture on film?
Juliette Eisner Well, you see my first impression in the film, itself. I am beside myself when I first meet her. It's like a punch to the stomach: she's that cute. Lil Bub obviously has an extremely unique look, but her aura goes far beyond just being cute.
Lil Bub, do you ever get tired of being in the spotlight?
LB I don't even know what a spotlight is. As long as I get my fishes, and everyone is happy, I'm content.
