Yves Saint Laurent wanted to corner the young, hyper-fluid, nonconforming sector of the market for its latest fragrance. Who better to represent the scent than pop powerhouse Dua Lipa? The “IDGAF” singer is the face of the new YSL fragrance, Libre, for the very reason her song suggests—she doesn’t give a f*ck.

Libre, while still a women’s fragrance, teeters on the edge of unisex. It borrows its core scent from the basis of most men’s colognes: fougère. The masculine fragrance category is built on notes of herb-forward lavender and musky oakmoss. Fougère’s sharp masculinity is toned down in Libre, muted by hyper-concentrated Moroccan orange blossom and what YSL calls “Diva Lavender,” which we imagine to be more delicate and girlish than herbaceous and earthy.

Lipa may love a little pink and a razor-sharp cat-eye, but she has a gender-bending aura about her. The British-Albanian pop singer frequently opts for traditionally masculine pieces, like baggy knit sweaters, cargo pants, graphic tees, and chunky sneaks. Her short black bob and sky-high cheekbones give her appearance a more edgy feel than other pop singers or models of her age. Gen X-ers flock to her for style inspiration, lifestyle goals and, of course, her rebellious, offbeat music. Lipa is the epitome of YSL Libre—free, youthful, outspoken and independent.

“I feel proud to be a part of this exact fragrance because it is what I stand for and what I feel like, as a woman in 2019, is such a big part of who we are,” Lipa said in a teaser video posted to the fashion house’s Instagram. “We want to just live our life the way we feel we deserve to. It’s when you make your decisions on your own terms—that, to me, is what freedom is.”
