Black Activists and Celebs Take Over White Influencers’ Instagrams for #ShareTheMicNow Campaign

The campaign aims to amplify Black women’s voices on social media

In honor of the recent remarkable social activism stemming from the Black Lives Matter movement, Bozoma Saint John, Luvvie Ajayi Jones, Glennon Doyle, and Stacey Bendet have created the #ShareTheMicNow campaign, which will feature Black celebrities and activists taking over white influencers’ Instagrams. The initiative, occurring on Wednesday, aims to magnify the voices of Black women on large, influential platforms in light of the protests against the U.S.’s systemic racism problem.

Some examples of the takeovers include William Morris Endeavor‘s CMO Saint John teaming up with Kourtney Kardashian, Black Lives Matter’s Co-Founder Opal Tometi teaming up with Ashley Graham, Olympic athlete Ibtihaj Muhammad teaming up with Alex Morgan, fashion and beauty editor Kahlana Barfield Brown teaming up with Julia Roberts, and many more.

The campaign features nearly 100 women from various sectors of Hollywood and encourages Black women to tell their stories. In a time when BIPOC still have limited representation and opportunities in the entertainment industry, the initiative hopes to inspire the systemic change that the industry desperately needs while educating a large platform of followers in the process.

The official statement of the #ShareTheMicNow campaign reads, “When the world listens to women, it listens to white women. For far too long, Black women’s voices have gone unheard, even though they’ve been using their voices loudly for centuries to enact change.”

“Today, more than ever, it is NECESSARY that we create a unifying action to center Black women’s lives, stories, and calls to action. We need to listen to Black women,” the statement continued. “This is why we created #ShareTheMicNow.”
