Prabal Gurung Designs A Love Letter To New York City
We’re crushing on Gurung’s playful new collection.
Prabal Gurung definitely seems to have gotten the Valentine’s Day memo for its Pre-Fall/FW 2021 collection. Titled “In The Mood For Love,” the brand’s latest installment premiered on its website as a love letter to New York City.
“I have always been romanced by the unexpected beauty and joy of New York City,” writes Nepalese-American designer Gurung. “Each day is its own exhilarating courtship, where even the simplest pleasures feel decadent: flowers from the bodega, morning coffee consumed while battling rush hour, or the symphony of a taxi ride. After twenty years, I still find myself enamored with the skyline.”
His collection wears its heart on its sleeve, punctuated with reds, pinks, black, and white in an assortment of patterns and solids. Playful florals and dots feel refreshing for a fall/winter collection. Gurung plays with shape and texture: red flare pants paired with a pink corset top are right on trend, and layers of ruffles, strategic ruching, and dramatic sleeves add texture. The designer doesn’t skimp on the details — embroidered cutouts, shimmering appliqués, and opera-length gloves add substance to the flirty collection.
Gurung debuted his collection with an Instagram video, a flurry of sound and movement that maximizes the pieces’ structure. Clips of Gurung and models speaking on their love for New York are interspersed between sequences of models dancing and parading in Gurung’s latest garments. Gurung’s video successfully ties together the collection’s theme while displaying the pieces’ wearability.
