MM6 Maison Margiela Releases Renovated Classics in New Autumn/Winter 2021 Collection

Upside-down and backwards define these modernized closet staples perfectly in tune with the topsy turvy times.

MM6 Maison Margiela returns to the runways to showcase their new Autumn/Winter 2021 collection with an emphasis on reinvention. The French fashion house’s traditional pieces are rebooted with an inversion of details. In a nod to the unconventional times we find ourselves living in, inside-out looks become the new norm.

Think: shoulder pads on the outside and coats with exposed shearling detail. A denim jacket gets a seam reversal, flipped back-to-front for a light wash contrasted with darker interior. The collection’s Nordic wool sweater is renovated from its standard appearance with an inside-out knit that lays like a tattered tapestry with vintage charm. Accessories do not falter from the theme of rebirth. Upside down and backwards define these reinvented closet staples such as an upside-down clutch with a hanging chain and fanny packs designed for backpack-like modality.

The campaign video, featured below, was shot on location in Margiela’s native city of Paris. The 11th arrondissement becomes the set of a runway show contrarily kicked off with a closing walk and backward walking models. A soundtrack of classical piano music with foreboding energy kicks in and out of reverse mode in line with the presentation of looks. For a behind-the-scenes peek, the film flashes to backstage chaos featuring lab coat-clad assistants scattering to touch up models’ final looks whilst sporting 2021’s most popular accessory: the mask.

MM6 Maison Margiela successfully redefines wardrobe classics and pays artistic homage to our unprecedented times.
