On Friday, the Republican transgender activist and former Olympian said that she will be running to be governor of California. Caitlyn Jenner took to her Twitter account to share news, which arrives as the possibility of a recall election impends on Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom’s term.

In the press release posted to Twitter, Jenner said “Californians want better and deserve better from their governor. For too long, career politicians have over-promised and under-delivered. We need a leader with a vision and the resolve to see it through. This will be a campaign of solutions, providing a roadmap back to prosperity to turn this state around and finally clean up the damage Newsom has done to this state.”

Gov. Newsom faces the potential fate of a recall as many question his handling of the coronavirus pandemic. There was one incident in particular that drew the last straw. Back in November, while California was in the crux of another covid surge, the governor was spotted mingling over a lobbyist friend’s birthday dinner in Napa, against his own COVID-19 protocols he put in place for the state. Other backers of the recall effort scrutinize his leadership of the state’s economy.

Despite this criticism, a recent poll conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California found that only 40 percent of the state’s voters would support a recall election of the current governor. Additionally, on many occasions, elected Democrats have pledged to stick by Newsom.

Celebrities running for office is no foreign concept to Californians, where voters elected Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Jenner’s future in politics appears unknown. Although she ultimately renounced former President Donald J. Trump, one or more of her advisors also worked with him in his quest for re-election. A questionable choice. LGBTQ+ groups have already expressed skepticism over her bid.
