More Details on Karl Lagerfeld’s Exhibit Have Been Released
The Costume Institute’s exhibition ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’ will seek to examine and honor the prolific designer
Ever since the late Karl Lagerfeld was named as the theme for this year’s highly anticipated Met Gala, onlookers have been patiently awaiting more details. Taking place on the first Monday in May – as always – The Met has announced that the iconic gala will accompany The Costume Institute’s exhibition ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’ that seeks to examine and honor the prolific designer.
With a career spanning from the 1950s to 2019 and across six labels, there are few designers in the history of fashion with a body of work as diverse and inventive as Lagerfeld. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando, the exhibit will take place from May 5th to July 16th in the museum’s Tisch Galleries, highlighting those designs for houses such as Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous label Karl Lagerfeld, focusing on his specific aesthetic sensibilities and themes that underscored his creations. The Costume Institute’s Wendy Yu is responsible for the exhibit’s curation, and Amanda Harlech will creative consult as a longtime friend of Lagerfeld.
At the center of the exhibit will also be a focus on uniting Lagerfeld’s sketches with their realized counterparts – of the 150 pieces that will compose the collection, nearly every design will be accompanied by a sketch, accentuating the complexity of his creative process. Video content will also be incorporated into the exhibit by French director and writer Loïc Prigent, who has long admired and worked extensively with the late designer.
Until more details are released, we will be patiently awaiting this year’s A-list looks at the Gala in honor of Karl.
