ALESSANDRO MICHELE MAKES A MOVE TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY WITH GUCCI OFF THE GRID
Featuring regenerated materials, solvent-free adhesives, organic cotton lining and more.

At this point in time, the conversation about sustainability and the importance of creating a more circular fashion system is all the more important. As we all grapple with the urgent responsibility to the environment and the health of our planet, more and more designers start to re-evaluate their business strategies and take steps towards creating more a more eco-friendly production model.
Now, Gucci is spearheading the movement towards a circular future, rethinking the way they make their products starting with Gucci Off the Grid.
Featuring a unisex range of sporty daywear and accessories made from organic, recycled, or bio-based materials, the first collection from Gucci Circular Lines reflects the fashion house’s philosophy and desire to leave behind a lighter environmental footprint. Every detail and material has been updated with sustainability in mind: drawstrings made of recycled polyester, snaps on the pockets made of recycled plastic, garments coming in Econyl — a regenerated nylon material that can be recycled over and over again. The capsule also includes the Gucci Tennis 1977 sneaker, updated with Econyl uppers, recycled steel eyelets, and organic cotton and viscose linings. The handbags are made with Econyl material in bright citrus hues, metal- and chrome-free leather trims and recycled brass hardware; solvent-free adhesives, interlining from regenerated material, zips with recycled polyester tape — all reflecting a deep, collaborative effort across Gucci departments.
Every detail has been carefully thought through, down to the product packaging. The Gucci Off The Grid collection will be wrapped and delivered in FSC-certified materials, such as a bag or a box made from recycled paper and recycled nylon pouches. All packaging will include a Gucci-logo’d card with all the information about the products and the story behind the Gucci Off The Grid sustainability project. The House has also incorporated more sustainable alternatives related to its sourcing of raw materials, manufacturing and production processes, all in order to lower greenhouse gas emissions. The remaining emissions will be offset through Gucci’s annual carbon neutral commitment, which supports REDD+ projects that protect forests and biodiversity in vital places around the world.
Gucci is set to continue pursuing its sustainability goals with Gucci Circular Lines — a larger initiative that will focus on minimizing the brand’s use of new raw materials and explore all manner of regenerated textiles. The move is consistent with the strategy of Gucci’s parent company Kering, whose Chief Sustainability Officer Marie-Claire Daveu said upcycling is “the future.” Between 2018 and 2019, Gucci has reportedly saved and repurposed 22 tons of leather scraps from its factories. Fostering this respect for the planet and its people, the House strives to create the world with greater freedom — the freedom to follow our dreams with curiosity, openness and joy.
