Billionaire Boys Club taps Grafitti Artist Todd James for Capsule Collection
The Art Basel Miami collection is utterly playful.

Street art is one of the fastest-growing sectors of the art scene right now. You probably know the big names, with Banksy’s anonymous designs capturing national headlines for his prankster antics. But so many other amazing artists, from Vhils to C215, are bringing street style to the upper echelons of design. Thus, it’s not surprising to see street art on full display at Art Basel Miami, the premiere art festival for up-and-coming creatives. What’s more unanticipated is the emergence of fashion within the festival, with new capsule collections dropping in tandem with art installations. Todd James, one of the leading figures of this street art movement, is just one example of this. In collaboration with Pharrell Williams’ Billionaire Boys Club, James designed a limited-edition collection of garments. Teeming with the colors and styles of graffiti work, the collection effortlessly melds the art and fashion worlds.

An homage to SK8THING, who imagined some of the early artwork for BBC ICECREAM, Todd James was sure to keep in those staple Billionaire Boys Club flourishes. Using the brand’s classic logo and graphics as a building block, James crafted a collection of printed garments that catch the eye. James’ street art prowess is put on full display, with colorwork and vibrant visuals perfected with ease. This feast of a collection includes a varsity jacket, skate deck, trucker hat, hoodie, series of tees, and, to our delicious satisfaction, a cookie jar. Plus, the collection centerpiece: a matching mesh set, printed head-to-toe in colorful creatures.
In celebration of the limited-edition drop, BBC ICECREAM and Pharrell Williams will host Todd James at their flagship Miami location on Thursday, December 1st. The event, placed perfectly within the Art Basel festival, stands as a commemoration of the evolution of art and design. Art will be seamlessly integrated within the event, with one of Todd James’ murals being painted on the store’s exterior walls.

Art and fashion are tangibly intertwined, both visual mediums using the eye as their funnel. Still, the worlds are too often held apart, barred by some notion of exclusivity. Art people may regard fashion as new-age nepotism flames, while fashion designers may regard art as the old guard, impractical form. These worlds deserve to mix, to find new creative forms together. When artists and fashion houses come together, like that of Todd James and Billionaire Boys Club, magic can be made. It’s a match made in heaven, one that should be capitalized on more frequently.
