Barbie’s Official Kickoff Party
Come on Barbie, let’s go party!
On June 25th, 2023, the first event for the Barbie movie was held in Los Angeles. Through a modern replication of the “Pink & Fabulous” Barbie from 2015, Margot Robbie was styled in a Barbie pink and white haltered Valentino mini dress. Paired with white Manolo Blahnik pumps, a yellow shoulder bag, and a yellow-tinted Assael Pearls bracelet, the look matched the original inspiration, flawlessly. Robbie was joined at the kickoff party by her co-star Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken, director Greta Gerwig, and many cast members, including America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, and Michael Cera.
Barbie’s First Press Brief in Sydney, Australia
Not all of the Barbie-styled looks are in the iconic pink shade. Inspired by the 1959 “The Original” Barbie, Hervè Leger took the pattern of the swimsuit and transformed it into a custom-made black and white striped bodycon mini dress for the press tour, finishing the look off with some Manolo Blahnik black open-toed shoes and Jacques Marie Mage white shades.
Barbie’s Fan Event in Sydney
The next two looks drew inspiration from the energy and colors that a modern Barbie would wear, without directly emulating a specific Barbie doll. In vintage Versace, Robbie donned the FW94 baby pink cable-knitted sweater, metallic mini pleated mini skirt, and pink socks with white platform loafers—worn by the supermodels, Christy Turlington and Kate Moss.
Barbie’s Sydney Celebration Party with Vogue Australia
Continuing the theme of supermodel-inspired looks, Andrew Mukamal styled Margo Robbie in another FW94 Versace look, previously worn by supermodel Claudia Schiffer. Held at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art in collaboration with Vogue Australia, Robbie dazzled in a bustier metal-mesh mini dress.
Barbie’s Seoul Premiere
How did Andrew Mukamal decide to outdo his previous Barbie-styled looks? Two Versace looks in one night, of course.
Inspired by the 1985 “Day To Night” Barbie, Robbie’s first preppy daytime look consisted of a pink pencil skirt and matching fitted blazer with white accents. The look was accessorized with a deeper Barbie pink scarf tucked into the blazer and a white boater-style hat with a pink and white polka dot accent. And of course, an iconic Judith Lieber Brick Phone Text Me Evening Clutch customized with fuchsia crystals. The second “Night” look was a shimmering bustier-style bodice with a bright pink layered tulle skirt, complemented by pink open-toed Manolo Blahnik heels.
Barbie’s Seoul Press Conference
Adorned in crystal embellishments, Robbie wore a Moschino skirt suit set from their 2015, inspired by the 1964 “Sparkling Pink” Barbie. Paired with a custom matching pillbox hat, heart-shaped handbag, and pink open-toed Manolo Blahnik heels. Other than opting for a brighter pink and a few modern modifications, the look is an incredibly close recreation of the ‘60s Barbie doll.
Barbie’s Party in Mexico City
Inspired by the 1992 “Earring Magic” Barbie, Robbie wore a custom-made Balmain strapless leather structured dress with lace long sleeves. Accessorized with a silver chain belt with two huge star charms and silver earrings with a heart and star charm that extend to her shoulder. And, of course, pink Manolo Blahnik heels.
Barbie’s Mexico City Photo Call
This one’s all about the hair. Inspired by the 1992 “Totally Hair” Barbie, Robbie wore a custom-made patterned Emilio Pucci mini dress with a ruffled bottom of the skirt. The star of the show was the ‘90s crimped hair, completing the look from top to bottom.
Barbie’s L.A. World Premiere
With the pink carpet rolled out, Robbie’s most recent look stole the spotlight in a custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture bustier Hollywood-style dress with sequin embroidery and a multi-layered tulle hem, designed by creative director Daniel Roseberry. Adorned with a hand-painted embroidered rose on the hem, the addition matched Robbie’s red lipstick and toenails. She accessorized the outfit with black opera gloves, black Manolo Blahnik peep-toe mules, and a collection of Lorraine Schwartz’s diamond jewelry. A simple light pink silk mousseline scarf was the perfect final touch to a show-stopping exact replica of the 1960 “Solo in the Spotlight” Barbie.
Barbie’s European Premiere in London
For the European Barbie premiere held in London, Andrew Mukamal curated an exceptional look for Robbie that paid homage to one of Britain’s most influential designers. Inspired by the “Enchanted Evening” doll from 1990, the Vivienne Westwood Couture corseted gown embraced her figure in a blend of blush pink satin and white tulle. A draped side train, held in place by a delicate rose brooch, cascaded to the pink carpet, evoking a sense of enchantment and grandeur. Complemented by an Assael Pearls three-tiered choker and silver Christian Louboutin heels—the first appearance of designer shoes other than Manolo Blahnik.
Later that night, Robbie shocked the press in a red mini-dress by Turkish-British fashion designer Dilara Findikoglu. The party look is rumored to be inspired by the 1962 “Brunette Bubble Cut” Barbie, who wore a red swimsuit.
Barbie’s London Photo Call
Continuing the Vivienne Westwood homage, Margot Robbie wore a skirt suit by the British fashion brand, complemented by Vivienne Westwood’s matching fluffy pink square bag and platform heels. The suit set seems to be one of the few looks not directly inspired by a Barbie doll, however, sticking to the pink Barbie theme, the original orange strings on the top of the suit set were replaced with pink, of course.
The actress attended the last photo call in London, which happened hours before the SAG-AFTRA strike started—which is a strike for fair pay and job security for screenplay writers and actors. The press tour was scheduled to include premieres in Berlin and New York City in the coming days. However, in solidarity with their fellow actors, the cast joined the SAG-AFTRA strike, halting the promotion of the film in conjunction with the guidelines of the strike.
