Alexander McQueen has long been known for deriving beauty from bold, often controversial, ideas. The British fashion house’s new Autumn/Winter 2023 women’s collection entitled “Anatomy” echoes that history while marrying it with a focus on sophisticated, structured tailoring. The result? Clothes that subvert the classics.

Photographed by renowned photographer David Sims, the campaign features an array of diverse talent including Naomi Campbell, Elle Fanning, Liu Wen, Eva Green, Yseult, Eliott De Smedt Day, Karolina Spakowski, and Momo Ndiaye. It’s a stunning homage to the runway presentation which set a moody night-out scene.

Coinciding with the collection’s debut in March, Creative Director Sarah Burton said she was inspired by the anatomy of tailoring: “You begin with a garment—you have to know that there’s a way to construct it, the bones of it, before you can dissect it.” In other words, you have to understand the basics before you can complicate them.

With a focus on cut and silhouette, juxtaposition is at the center of the collection. Garments are twisted, slashed, and undone yet waists remain narrow, striking timeless proportions. For all of the collection’s sharpness, there’s a traditional femininity to it, too.
