Leave it to Kim Jones to explore how to bring the elegance of ballet and menswear to Dior Men’s Fall/Winter 2024 show. The Men’s Artistic Director drew inspiration from two intertwining stories to come up with this collection. Jones reflects on Monsieur Dior’s relationship with the ballet dancer, Margot Fonteyn, while also looking back on his uncle, Colin Jones, who was a dancer and photographer who worked with Fonteyn’s dance partner, Rudolf Nureyev. The collection aims to bring together traditionally feminine and lavish ballet wear with traditionally utilitarian menswear to create looks that value both durability and design.
The influence is seen throughout the collection as multiple staples of dancewear trickle into the looks. The instantly recognizable ballet slipper is reinterpreted on the runway as a sneaker through the use of leather and silk polyester. More nuanced influences result in zipped wool jumpsuits and shorts and ribbed knits to mimic rehearsal-ready garments. Dior Men also makes an effort to infuse couture-like ideas into ready-to-wear and create a new, elevated experience. There is an emphasis on pulling inspiration from Dior’s archives with embroideries, notably from the Debussy dress, being brought to modern menswear. Jones also utilizes tailoring to create this couture vision by ensuring quality is of the highest caliber.
The collection was showcased on a vast circular runway that centered all focus on the clothing with music composed by Max Richter. Models stood in the middle of the runway after walking and began to rotate and rise, leveling up the show’s drama. The music incorporated elements from Sergei Prokofiev’s Dance of the Knights which was a part of his Romeo and Julliet ballet.
