Anwar Hadid has long embraced an alternative edge, cultivating a persona rooted in rawness and rebellion. Now, that identity takes shape in the form of handmade leather accessories with the launch of OBSIDIAN, a new line by Hadid and designer Ty Stephano.

V Magazine: You started Martyre — a unisex jewelry line with Yoni Laham in 2019 — known for its timeless appeal and spiritual symbolism. You’re also the frontman of alternative rockband, “howvanish.” How does OBSIDIAN build on or depart from that foundation?

Anwar Hadid: Obsidian truly is a collaboration of energy – all of what I love to do pours through this brand because of my roots in music and design. I can create what I like to call vessels – objects that support life, produced with purpose and intentionality. 

V: When it comes to this new line, what excites you most — the craftsmanship, the materials, the story behind it, etc.?

AH: For sure the craftsmanship – being able to be hands on with all of these samples and materials. Ty and I see a long runway of creating ahead of us.

V: How did you and Ty Stephano come together as co-founders of OBSIDIAN? What unique strengths are each of you able to bring to the brand?

AH: I was walking down the street on my way to make a belt and we saw each other and we started talking about making belts so we saw it as a sign. From that day forward we started working together – we are both very hands on and creative, we bring a lot to the table. 

V: How has your own lifestyle and personal style shaped these designs? In what ways do they feel distinctly ‘yours’?

AH: I feel like this collection and the ones to come represent my community – I will make the gear we need.

V: Is there a standout piece from the collection that you’re especially excited to share with the world — and why?

AH: I’m excited for it all man! I like the leather jacket in the collection – it’s the best jacket I’ve ever worn. 

V: What compelled you to create OBSIDIAN now, and how do you imagine the brand evolving in the future? 

AH: This was always coming for me, I think it will evolve in incredible ways. I believe Obsidian is capable of anything we put our minds to. And we are hungry to create – we are working on the next collection already!
