Today, the worlds of art and fashion feel more connected—and more dependent on collaboration—than ever before. This week, Uniqlo, a brand with a rich history of partnering with artists, designers, and innovators across industries, has titled contemporary artist KAWS as the brand’s first-ever Artist in Residence.

“I am thrilled to be taking this next step with my longtime partner UNIQLO to become the brand’s first Artist in Residence. In this role, I hope to tap into the art community and global creatives to curate the next generation of UNIQLO collaborators,” says KAWS of his new appointment. “I am looking forward to working on exciting new kinds of LifeWear.”

The two have a rich history. Between their first partnership in 2016 and their most recent just last year, Uniqlo and KAWS have released seven capsules, even uniting with other brands in the process, including Peanuts, Sesame Street, and Warhol.

Renowned for his distinctive contemporary art style that subverts pop culture, KAWS joins Uniqlo to support new collaborators, propose innovative creative concepts, actively participate in future UT Grand Prix competitions, and join events alongside UNIQLO Global Brand Ambassadors. Beyond wearing this list of varied creative hats, KAWS is also set to play a role in the development of the brand’s LifeWear products—the first collection set to release in Fall/Winter 2025.

“In our ever-evolving world, art is now more important than ever as an expression of our humanity. KAWS has been breaking the traditional boundaries of the art world, just as Uniqlo in its efforts to redefine the apparel industry through LifeWear,” says President of Global Creative for Uniqlo and Fast Retailing, John C Jay. “As our Artist in Residence, KAWS will help Uniqlo to expand the global appreciation and participation of art and creativity for all.”
