V-ISITS: Andaz Lisbon

A vibrant oasis that mirrors the identity of Portugal’s capital city

There is no shortage of luxury hotels in Lisbon these days. As the city continues its evolution into one of Europe’s most compelling cultural capitals, an increasing number of international names have arrived eager to claim a piece of it. The challenge, however, has never been opening a beautiful hotel, but rather opening one that caters to visitors while still feeling like Lisbon.

The newly opened Andaz Lisbon makes a convincing case that the two goals are not mutually exclusive.

Occupying a collection of restored buildings along Rua do Comércio in the heart of Baixa, Hyatt’s first Andaz property in Portugal places guests just moments from Praça do Comércio, where the city’s grand waterfront meets the Tagus River. From its doorstep, guests can easily access all the best that the poetic city—which often feels like a village compared to other European capitals—has to offer. Historic cafés spill onto sun-drenched squares, vintage trams climb toward Alfama, and independent shops line streets that have remained central to the city’s rhythm for centuries.

Rather than competing with its surroundings, The Andaz Lisbon embraces them.

Designed by Patricia Urquiola in collaboration with Moerschel Arquitectos, the interiors draw from Portugal’s material traditions without slipping into nostalgia. Cork, Lioz stone, handcrafted ceramics, mahogany, and mosaic surfaces appear throughout the property, transformed into spaces that are unmistakably contemporary. The palette is rich without feeling heavy, while carefully commissioned works by Portuguese and international artists reinforce the sense that creativity—not ornamentation—is the defining luxury here.

The same philosophy extends to each of the hotel’s 170 guestrooms and suites. Soft textures, custom furnishings, and locally inspired details replace the predictable language of international luxury hotels, creating rooms that feel residential rather than theatrical. Many overlook the rooftops of Baixa or frame views toward the Tagus, while select accommodations enjoy a direct sightline to the Rua Augusta Arch, one of Lisbon’s defining landmarks. Throughout, thoughtful technology sits quietly in the background, allowing the focus to remain on craftsmanship, comfort, and place.

Food serves as another expression of Portugal’s long relationship with the wider world. At Luzzi, the rooftop restaurant overlooking the city, chef Bruno Alves explores the country’s centuries of cultural exchange through ingredients and techniques that stretch well beyond its borders while remaining anchored in Portuguese identity. Downstairs, the Andaz Lounge offers a more relaxed atmosphere, drawing inspiration from Lisbon’s beloved neighborhood kiosks with elevated takes on familiar local dishes alongside Portuguese wines and inventive cocktails.

Guests looking to recharge between afternoons spent exploring the city’s steep streets can make use of the hotel’s Technogym-equipped fitness center, while a dedicated spa is set to open in the near future. Until then, in-room wellness treatments offer a quieter alternative for unwinding after a day in the Portuguese capital.

The recent opening also represents an important milestone for the Andaz brand itself, marking its arrival in Portugal as Hyatt continues to expand its lifestyle portfolio across Europe. Yet what makes the property memorable is less the name above the door than its willingness to let Lisbon take center stage. Rather than importing a recognizable aesthetic, Andaz Lisbon reflects the textures, craftsmanship, and creative energy that have defined the city for generations.

For travelers seeking a hotel that feels connected to its surroundings without sacrificing contemporary design, Andaz Lisbon arrives as one of the capital’s most compelling new addresses.
