Escentric Molecules Celebrates 20 Years of Shifting Fragrance Culture

The radical fragrance house traces its own DNA with ‘C0DE WITHIN,’ a new campaign that gets to the very essence of what started it all.

Sensory experiences do not have to be complicated. A vast array of ingredients, tools, and stories often muddles contemporary perfumery. But for two decades, it has been the core mission of Escentric Molecules to demystify the world of scent, starting with one singular molecule. Now, 20 years after one molecule sparked a cultural phenomenon, they have unveiled C0DE WITHIN, a campaign that continues on their most radical foundational idea: fragrance doesn’t transform you, it reveals you.

In 2006, perfumer and Escentric Molecules co-founder Geza Schoen isolated a single molecule, Iso E Super, and created a fragrance solely out of its formula. This fragrance was Molecule 01, released alongside Escentric 01 as the pair that launched Escentric Molecules. Molecule 01 is Iso E Super in its totality, 100% undiluted, creating a mysterious, cocooning, radiant, and addictive scent that fuses with the skin. Escentric 01 uses Iso E Super at 65% of its formula, accompanied by18 supporting notes that draw out its fresh, radiant and sensual facets. Lime peel and pink pepper create an initial flicker, green jasmine bud and orris soften the center, before balsamic notes and clean musk settle into a quiet, magnetic hum. Together, the two fragrances marked the first step of Escentric Molecules’ voyage through subverting cultural trends and garnering a cult following across the international scene. “It made aroma-chemicals sexy,” Schoen said about Molecule 01. “It disrupted the status quo and opened the door to a whole new way of thinking about scent.”

And if there’s any brand that can disrupt the status quo, it’s Escentric Molecules. Years before gender-neutral fragrances became an industry trend, Molecule 01 was designed for skin, not gender. In doing so, Escentric Molecules became an originator of what we now call the “skin scent” long before the category had a name of its own. Upon launch, the fragrance sold out almost immediately and generated long waiting lists, beginning a cult following that would only grow. The brand has developed a base of wearers organically, simply through the quality of the product, a quality that once obliged Kate Moss to send a taxi across London for the last remaining bottle.

Twenty years later, ‘C0DE WITHIN’ brings that philosophy into a new era. Directed by Services Généraux, the campaign returns to the countercultural spirit that has shaped Escentric Molecules from the beginning, bringing together three distinct creative identities: Emirati-Egyptian musician Mayah Alkhateri of Kiss Facility, London-based performance artist Alfie Sibthorpe of Rat Section, and American actor, artist, and model Soap Collins. Together, they embody one shared idea: the molecule stays the same, but the wearer changes everything.
