One Jacket, 160 Ways: J.Crew Celebrates 40 Years of The Barn Jacket

The heritage brand takes its most enduring icon on the road with 160 people across five cities in the jacket that has belonged to everyone since 1986
If there’s one thing that J.Crew knows how to do exceedingly well, it’s turn nostalgia into something tangible, and for the 40th anniversary of The Barn Jacket, the brand has done exactly that. Since its introduction in 1986, The Barn Jacket has slipped seamlessly into wardrobes of every kind, and to commemorate four decades of its staying power, J.Crew took the jacket back on the road.

Shot by Robert Nethery, 160 people across New York City, Los Angeles, Austin, Boston and Chicago were photographed wearing the Barn Jacket in their own ways. Open-cast discoveries, local legends, athletes, artists, and more each made the jacket their own, captured in intimate portraits that feel less like a traditional campaign and more like a collective record of the people who wear it.

“The barn jacket has always had an ease and utility that make it incredibly versatile,” said Olympia Gayot, Creative Director of Women’s and Kids at J.Crew. Versatile indeed. Appearing on talent including True Whitaker, Chance the Rapper, Bowen Yang, Spike Lee, and a cast of characters spanning generations and disciplines, the jacket took on a life of its own. Across all 160 portraits, one constant remained: The Barn Jacket became a common thread connecting different cities, generations, and perspectives.

One iconic piece, 160 iterations. Worn fully buttoned with the collar neatly folded. Paired with a cowboy hat. Collar popped. Thrown on as an easy overcoat. The styling was as varied as the people wearing it, speaking to the campaign’s central idea: that true relevance isn’t about remaining unchanged, but about leaving room to be interpreted again and again. The campaign is the latest chapter in J.Crew’s ongoing excavation of its own visual history. It follows The Next Rollneck Generation, the Fall 2025 campaign that brought the brand’s signature rollneck back into focus. Both campaigns point to a larger philosophy: for J.Crew, looking backward isn’t an exercise in preservation so much as a way of finding new starting points for what comes next.

Heading into Fall 2026, The Barn Jacket returns to the collection with 29 styles across women’s, men’s, and kids’. The familiar cotton canvas remains, joined by new fabrications, finishes and embellished interpretations that push the icon into new territory. Three words: The Barn Jacket. But J.Crew’s latest campaign is a reminder that those three words have never described just one style. Since 1986, it’s been everywhere, and perhaps more importantly, it’s been everyone’s.
