2020 Billboard Music Awards Fashion Review

With only a few fashion missteps.

In the world of virtual concerts and limited in-person social gatherings, the 2020 Billboard Music Awards seemed to be a step forward in a return to the events we know and love. Held at the Dolby Theatre in California, nominees and celebs walked a socially distant red carpet, showing off their all-out looks for one of the few in-person awards shows since the start of COVID.

Broadcast from NBC with hostess Kelly Clarkson, musicians performed live to no IRL audience, but all of us at home got to stream the exciting performances, not so different from every other year. These celebs also gave us a good old-fashioned red carpet, head-to-toe glam for us all to lightly critique, as per usual. Scroll through to see our favorite looks of the night, from the carpet to the stage.

Kelly Clarkson

Host Kelly Clarkson had a few different looks for the night, kicking it all of in this metallic fringe number. Extra points for matching her nails to her shoes and bustier.

Nicole Richie

Fashion legend Nicole Richie stunned on the carpet and presented on stage in this sheer black floral moment, classy and elegant as always.

Brandy

The always iconic singer and actress Brandy appeared at the BBMAs in this bold, expressive number before switching into a more muted look for her performance.

Lil Nas X

Fresh off his high fashion collab with Christian Cowan for Fashion Month, Lil Nas X rocked this snakeskin Gucci suit at the Billboard Music Awards, taking home an impressive four awards.

Doja Cat

Channeling Cher in Bob Mackie with a mix of Jessica Rabbit, Doja Cat stunned in this purple bejeweled gown and redhead moment.

Jharrel Jerome

Bringing luxe streetwear to the Billboard red carpet, acclaimed actor Jharrel Jerome is set to take on the music world next. After releasing his single “For Real” in September, this appearance marks a bigger (stylish) move for him into music.

Bad Bunny

Rocking Yohji Yamamoto’s hit streetwear brand, Y-3, Bad Bunny mastered casual chic on the red carpet.

Garcelle Beauvais

Stunning actress, and latest cast member of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Garcelle Beauvais was a vision in orange in this high-slit, satin moment.

Kelly Clarkson

No awards show is complete without a few different outfit changes from the host, and Kelly Clarkson certainly didn’t disappoint. Looking a little like the BBMA trophy itself, Clarkson looked fabulously regal on stage.

Addison Rae

In a very 2020 moment, Tik Toker Addison Rae looked exquisite in this all-black look while accepting the Billboard Chart Achievement Award on behalf of everyone’s favorite, Harry Styles in iconic BVLGARI Serpenti jewels.

Sia

Performing for fans at home, Sia gave us a classically-Sia extravagant fashion moment in the oversized gown and bow to match, but we have some questions about her packaged ramen-esque hair.

Cher

Cher is never one to turn down a metallic moment, and we loved her in this chained, embellished mini.

Doja Cat

Another sheer, bedazzled look from Doja Cat, her performance look was figure-skater meets Roxie Hart, and we’re not upset.

Brandy

There’s certainly a lot going on in Brandy’s performance look, from the high neck to the long cape to the unfinished hemlines, but it somehow we don’t hate it.

Taraji P. Henson

Styled by Jason Bolden, Taraji P. Henson looked statuesque in this structured gown and high-cut slit.

Post Malone

Winning nine awards, including Top Artist, Post Malone accepted his accolades in this sleek, head-to-toe black look with an ever-so fashion-forward solo cup accessory.

After Awards

Lizzo

We definitely missed Lizzo’s award show looks while in quarantine, and she did not disappoint at the BBMAs. Making a bold and clear statement both with her dress and in her speech, Lizzo encourages us all to vote next month, so of course we’re all going to listen to Lizzo and get out the vote!

Billie Eilish

Last but certainly not least, the effortlessly cool Billie Eilish took home all of her awards in this green floral Gucci look, complete with a mask and bucket hat.
