2021 MTV Movie and TV Awards Best Moments and Winners
Scarlett Johansson got slimed, Sacha Baron Cohen met up with Borat, and “WandaVision” won big on Sunday night.
The MTV Movie & TV Awards are back with two ceremonies honoring some of the fans’ favorite films and TV series from the past year. The first one, which celebrated scripted productions, took place on Sunday night at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, with comedian Leslie Jones as the host.
The second ceremony, which for the first time will honor unscripted series, airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET and will be hosted by Nikki Glaser. Take a look at some of Sunday night’s biggest moments and the full list of winners below:
Leslie Jones’s monologue
Leslie Jones opened the ceremony with a pre-taped WandaVision spoof that took her on a trip through various sitcom genres and featured special cameos from Kat Dennings and Randall Park in their roles as Darcy Lewis and Agent Jimmy Woo. Jones then took the stage for a monologue referencing nominees and her romantic life. “Somebody had the nerve, the audacity, one guy had the audacity, to try to ghost me. I’m gonna call you on all seven of my phones. All seven of them!,” she joked. “You cannot ghost a ghostbuster!”
Jones later took home the golden popcorn for Best Comedic Performance for her role in Coming 2 America and accepted the award along with traditional dancers and drum players.
Scarlett Johansson gets slimed
Scarlett Johansson was honored with the 2021 Generation Award celebrating her career in the film industry. The actress accepted the golden popcorn from home – but mid-speech, her partner Colin Jost spilled a bowl of green slime over her head. She seemed less than pleased about it not only because of the prank itself but because Jost seemed to be nodding to the wrong awards show. “MTV! ‘You got slimed!’” he said, to which she replied, “That’s Nickelodeon!”
Onstage romance
Outer Banks’s Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes won the award for Best Kiss and celebrated accordingly: the actors are a real-life couple and shared a smooch on stage while accepting their golden popcorn. “I feel like there are so many people that I want to thank that I’m not sure of. I’m kinda panicking right now,” Stokes said before Cline interrupted him and gently pulled him by the neck for a kiss.
To All the Boys wins the top prize
Always and Forever, the third and final film in the To All the Boys series, won the award for Best Movie, which was accepted by star Lana Condor, producer Matt Kaplan, and author Jenny Han, who wrote the original books the movies were based on. “You’ve shown so much love for Lara Jean. I just thank you so much for that,” Han said. “And I ask that you just keep showing that love for the whole Asian-American community at large.”
WandaVision wins big
WandaVision received the coveted golden popcorn for Best Show over Bridgerton, Cobra Kai, Emily in Paris, and The Boys. Elizabeth Olsen took home the prize for Best Performance in a Show for her role as Wanda, while Kathryn Han was awarded Best Villain for her portrayal of Agatha. The duo also collectively won the award for Best Fight.
Sacha Baron Cohen faces off Ali G, Borat, and Brüno
Sacha Baron Cohen was commemorated with the Comedic Genius Award, which returned to the ceremony after five years. Baron Cohen accepted his special golden popcorn after dismissing his famous characters Borat and Ali G and was later interrupted by Brüno, who “finished” the acceptance speech for him. “Before anyone does it, I’m officially cancelling myself,” the actor said.
