5 MONCLER CRAIG GREEN Debuts Spring Summer 2021
The British designer was inspired by the natural world and how we can harness that power to propel us forward.
5 MONCLER Craig Green SS 2021 was a fashion-forward take on clothing for the outdoors. Inspired by how our relationship with nature has changed this past year, the collection celebrates a renewed freedom of connection with the elements, embracing the possibilities within the natural world to propel us forward. “Even the mere act of being in nature, nowadays, feels transformative”, said Green.
The designer created a modern range of light wearable pieces that were made with practicality in mind. The central theme revolved around the idea of contrasts: transparent/opaque, quilted/plain, matt/shiny, water/land. Embracing both but finding the balance in between. Cotton windbreakers and nylon jackets inspired but utilitarian, and uniform silhouettes were shown with chinos, long parkas, and monogrammed bags.
Natural earth tones were used with moments of red, yellow, orange, and blue. Green also merged these colors to create quilting patterns. An intentionally ambiguous monogram featured throughout the collection, its thick coiling lines created a zoomorphic effect. Smooth and flowing, the monogram represents symmetrical structures in nature and harmony with the environment. Speaking on the collection Green commented, “There is a scientific aspect to MONCLER that I find inspiring. I wanted to explore ways of pushing simplicity to the extreme and using the process of down filling almost like a print, building volumes around the body from flat items, from 2D to 3D. For me, Moncler is ultimately about protection and functionality”.
