A “Game of Thrones” Prequel is Making its Way to Broadway

The world of Westeros is taking to the stage

Even after its polarizing conclusion in 2019, “Game of Thrones” hasn’t lost in momentum. “A Song of Ice and Fire” author George R.R. Martin recently signed a new deal with HBO and is reportedly in the process of working on three new spin-offs from the “Game of Thrones” franchise. But the immensely popular series is transcending mediums and coming to the stage, with reports of a prequel in the works for Broadway.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Martin’s acclaimed series is being brought back for a prequel for the stage. It’s being helmed by producers Simon Painter and Tim Lawson (The Illusionists), along with Kilburn Live. Director Dominic Cooke (The Courier) and award-winning playwright Duncan MacMillan (1984) will be joining the team as well along with Martin.

The prequel play will reportedly be set during the events of The Great Tourney at Harrenhal, a contest which took place 16 years before the events of the main series. According to Martin’s history of Westeros from the books, several well-known characters like Ned Stark, Jaime Lannister, and Robert Baratheon will be present during the tournament. Other characters like Cersei and Tyrion Lannister, Littlefinger, and Varys could also be present, although none have been confirmed yet.

“The play will for the first time take audiences deeper behind the scenes of a landmark event that previously was shrouded in mystery,” says the play’s official description. “Featuring many of the most iconic and well-known characters from the series, the production will boast a story centered around love, vengeance, madness and the dangers of dealing in prophecy, in the process revealing secrets and lies that have only been hinted at until now.”

The so-far untitled prequel production is anticipated to debut in London’s West End, New York City, and Australia by 2023.
