A Renaissance Revival: Vivienne Westwood’s Summer 2023 Campaign Gets An Archival Upgrade
The legacy of the modern punk messiah, Mrs. Westwood, is again enlivened in the house’s latest renaissance collection.
Led by infamous model muses Irina Shayk, Amelia Gray, and Lars Eidinger, Vivienne Westwood’s latest Spring Summer campaign is one that screams Renaissance. Reminiscent of Westwood’s 1990 corset from her “Portrait Collection,” the collection plays with notes of darkness and light as a means to historical transformation. Set against an eerie darkened theater, the house pulls on looks that embody the means of rebirth, as referenced in the English Renaissance.
“John Donne understood that when we get dressed, we ask something of the world. All clothes speak: they say desire me, or oh ignore me, or endow my words with greater seriousness than you would were I not wearing this hat.” spoken words from the beautifully written Super-Infinite – The Transformations of John Donne by Katherine Rundell.
Following the beloved passing of fashion’s most influential designer, Mrs. Vivienne Westwood, aka the original priestess of modern punk, the house continues to render her legacy through their latest campaign. Responsible for bringing new-wave fashion and “provocative” looks into the mainstream, the British fashion designer and style icon will remain a fundamental force in contemporary fashion and primitive punk culture.
