If you’re ever looking to discover emerging designers, with an unwavering hunger to get their unique design styles out to the world, then Los Angeles Fashion Week is the destination for you. This past weekend, adidas Originals certainly made its presence known during LA Fashion Week as the sportswear house paid a little visit to the city of angels to uncover what the fashion scene looks like on the west. From a lively kickoff cocktail party at their flagship store to a finale worthy of fanfare from showgoers, adidas Originals certainly knows how to draw in a crowd.

But let’s start at the beginning. For the first night of a two-part fete of fashion, adidas Originals gathered together some of the city’s finest and freshest to their boutique on Melrose Avenue. With a pre-party at the shop kicking off the evening’s multiple affairs throughout the city, the night was filled with soundtracking by DJ OG Webbie, as street style stars, magazine editors, stylists, content creators, and beyond gathered together to toast the arrival of the new adiZero Goukana sneaker, as a special sneaker customization excited many shoppers while sneak peeks of the soon to be debuted runway looks were previewed for guests to discover.

Alongside some of the party goers were the designers of the runway show, mingling with guests as they gushed over their designs and exciting collaborative experience with adidas. But who were they exactly? In attendance, the designers included Brandon “BJ” Gray (House of Gray), Rebecca Henry & Akua Shabaka (House of Aama), Project Runway Allstars winner Bishme Cromartie, Esther “Ecé” Ekeanyanwu (Ecé Designs), Kelly Hsieh, and Baba Jagne of JAGNE.

For Jagne, the experience itself of working alongside a giant brand like adidas was surprisingly not nerve wracking as one would imagine, in fact it was quite the opposite. The designer and his atelier only utilized four days from start to finish for his four runway looks. As challenging as it seems, the designer is cool, calm, and collected with the pressure of it all. “I live for this kind of stuff,” he explains. “In this industry, where you work with a lot of clients, and are always on set, the turn around times are always really fast. My team is built to able to handle it. We work better under pressure so this exercise was good. If you have a project you need by tomorrow, I’m that guy—no matter how complicated.”

With the six designers ready to show their take on a the heritage house’s DNA, the creatives kicked off the lively show one by one, each presenting four looks that uniquely represented their design approach and aesthetic, while utilizing already existing adidas pieces and fabrics for an up-cycled feel. With a few key looks paired with the new adiZero Goukana sneaker, the ensembles each represented the ever-growing presence of athleisure in the realm of high fashion. For Jagne, the merging of his two worlds (one revolving around his own namesake label and the other with a brand all too familiar since his childhood) was as simple as it seems: “I just took some of my brand’s core pieces and ‘adidas-ified’ them. Adidasify your life! [The pieces] have a sport edge, but its also something you can transition from work to grab a drink or go to the gym. It has to reflect the city [of Los Angeles] and the part of the city that we’re in.”
