Afropunk Announces Virtual Festival for Spring 2021

In April 2021, “Black Spring” will mark a virtual coming together of performers and fans from Miami.

Afropunk has announced a virtual return for April 2021, spotlighting Afro-Latin and Afro-Caribbean artists with “Black Spring.”

A cultural institution herald for its defiance of genre and the mainstream, Afropunk’s new initiative marks a milestone for the festival, furthering its legacy of inclusion, activism and an array of globally renowned and upcoming talent. Taking place in Miami, FL, “Black Spring” will be a worldwide virtual experience with COVID-safe, regulated watch parties and performances.

Spotlighting Afro-Latin artists, “Black Spring” is an immersive experience in which performers and fans can come together for panels, talks, salon sessions and concerts filmed live in Miami. Just like the name evokes, the “Black Spring” will be a resurgence of artistry, a revitalizing revolution and a period of creative reawakening and renewal, reclaiming freedom at the turn of the seasons.

Afropunk is calling Afro-Latin and Afro-Caribbean artists to the stage in the virtual festival to bask in their creative artistry, celebrating their Blackness on a global platform, where they can be embraced, seen and heard. Focusing on the intersectionality of existence, identity and production, “Black Spring” will be an ever-evolving cultural space in which discourse, inspiration, love and creation flow endlessly, supporting Afropunk’s pillars of support, affirmation and education.

“Afropunk has always been about centering the genius of Black creators from throughout the diaspora and in this time of renewal we are inspired by the spirit of resilience and joy in the Afro-Latinx diaspora,” said Nichelle Sanders, Afropunk Strategic Advisor. “From music to politics to culture, this community has contributed to revolutionary progress in global Black culture. We are so excited to bring some light, heat, sun and party after the dark winter of 2020. We are also excited to provide a further platform to explore the deep complexity and intersections of Blackness, Latinidad, nationality, gender, sexuality and more in the newest edition of Afropunk.”
