After a Two Year Hiatus, Ryan Destiny Returns with “How Many”

Her new single exposes a confident woman set on forging her own path.

Ryan Destiny is a triple threat in the truest sense of the word. In the video for her newly released single, “How Many,” the Detroit-born, Hollywood-based singer and actress dances nonchalantly in the center of a mirrored cube lit coolly to visually mimic ice. With Destiny in an aqua blue bikini top, cropped jacket, and low-rise, lace-front leather pants, what we’re observing is a young woman intent on finding her own voice, form, and freedom.

“I like telling my experiences through a lens of coming out of a situation better than I came into it. Hopefully smarter, wiser,” says Destiny of the lyrics on “How Many,” a track that questions a past relationship of deception and avoidance. But we’re not getting a woman who seems at all broken by her past—in both voice and motion, Destiny is decidedly calm.

Coming off of her 2020 single “Do You,” which she released in the thick of COVID-19’s early days, “How Many” still strikes a similar sound, but with a bit more edge.

Beyond her career in music, Destiny is no stranger to acting; she is perhaps best known for her leading role in Lee Daniels’musical drama Star on Fox TV, along with a recurring role on the Black-ish spin-off, Grown-ish. In 2023, she is set to act in Flint Strong, a film by the Academy Award-winning Director of Moonlight, Barry Jenkins.

As a singer-songwriter, actor, and dancer, “Destiny” is a fitting name for someone so clearly placing faith in her own.
