Alewya Releases Remix of Debut Single, “Sweating”

Alewya brings the party with new hit.

Missing the club? Alewya just brought the party to you. Off the back of her highly-anticipated debut single, “Sweating,” released in June after months of delays, the singer-songwriter just dropped the song’s dancefloor remix. A sculptor, painter, and model (she was discovered by Cara Delevingne on the set of an indie film), Alewya was dubbed “this decade’s triple threat” by LOVE Magazine.

The multiracial, multidisciplinary artist worked with DJ Honey Dijon on the remix, creating a funky house groove to underscore her lush, breathy vocals. The original version of “Sweating” was produced by duo The Busy Twist, who specialize in bass-heavy beats that “re-joins the dots between Accra and London.” Alewya has also featured on Little Simz’s stripped-back “where’s my lighter.”

Alewya was born in Saudi Arabia to an Egyptian father and Ethiopian mother. She moved to West London at five years old. As a girl, she was surrounded by a Moroccan community on Goldhawk Road and Afro-Caribbean friends. She grew up hearing the call to prayer from her local mosque and the vibrations of ambient alternative rock through the wall of her older brother’s bedroom. All these influences flow through and charge her music.

The result is a temperature-raising remix about feeling powerful in a crowded room. “I was definitely feeling myself when I made it,” Alewya told The Face recently. “I want people to feel themselves right now — we’re all feeling a bit shaky!”
