With the Met Gala’s launch of the Costume Institute’s spring 2018 exhibition Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, attendees to the event showed out in their finest, as per usual. Alexa Chung gave us some insight to her bespoke design for the evening, an exclusive ALEXACHUNG look perfectly accessorized with Buccellati jewelry.
The founder and creative director of ALEXACHUNG states of her look, “I wanted a dress that I could wear rather than one that would be wearing me. A dress I could have fun in. How people feel in clothes is a priority for me when it comes to design and this occasion was no different in our approach. I wanted to make a dress I could feel confident, timeless and timely in.”
To tackle the look for the event, her team first explored the theme of the exhibition—holy symbolism meets couture. She visited imagery of Anne Boleyn, Catherine of Aragon, and other historical portraits of women representing the tenacity and undertone of rebellion during this time of shifting religion. The necklace from Italian jewelry house Buccellati features a set of drop-shaped pearls in yellow and white with 261 rose-cut diamonds, inspired by a drawing made by Gianmaria Buccellati.
To accompany the 300-carat necklace are a pair of pendant earrings in white gold, set with 74 round brilliant-cut diamonds and two pearls. Last but not least is the cocktail ring in white and yellow gold, set with 100 round brilliant-cut diamonds and one oval cabochon emerald. Chung states of her choice of jewelry for the event, “I chose the necklace as it was pearls which resembled acorns to give me strength, empowerment and the ability to grow. Which in a Met Gala environment is the kind of spiritual back up one needs”. Get an exclusive peek at the stunning jewelry and how it came to life below.
