As both a professional skateboarder and fine artist, Alexis Sablone contains quite a riveting duality. In honor of her shredding skills and artful eye, Converse teamed up with Sablone in the creation of a new skate sneaker, the AS-1 Pro, as well as welcoming guests to the Guggenheim Museum to unveil both a skating-oriented personal documentary as well as an art installation for one-night only.
Inspired by Sablone’s creative and athletic prowess, the AS-1 Pro sneaker was designed as a touchpoint where athleticism meets art. Taking inspiration from the aesthetics of 80’s Converse basketball shoes, the sneaker was designed with an acute sense of detail throughout. With a newly engineered coring, the shoe was created to assist with impact cushioning, while the herringbone-patterned outsole gives the shoe the ability to form an optimal grip with a skateboard.
The documentary created by Jeremy Elkin, titled “AS-1,” follows Sablone’s build-up to the launch of her shoe with Converse. Within the documentary, Sablone reflects on the path that her career has taken, largely focusing on the intricate relationship between skateboarding and art-making in her own personal life. Her athleticism and creativity are symbiotic, both feeding off of one another to influence Sablone in her escapades in both realms. The documentary ultimately leads to quite a significant axis of her interests, as Sablone became the first person to skate the iconic NYC art institution of the Guggenheim.
For the one-night-only art installation at the Guggenheim, Sablone designed the space to appear as a Cubist-adjacent face from a bird’s eye view. Within these structures that make up the face from above, Sablone has housed a host of her creative pieces in a product display setting. These creative expressions include BTS design inspiration for the AS-1 Pro as well as a range of selected pieces from Sablone’s personal archive. The museum’s installation speaks to the prowess of this modern-day creative, as Sablone is far from a one-trick pony.
The AS-1 Pro sneaker debuts globally on May 2, 2023, with additional colorways launching June 2, 2023, on Converse.com and select global retailers.
