Performance artist and DJ Alice Longyu Gao has shown her music prowess on multiple occasions, curating and mixing special runway soundtracks for brands like Juicy Couture and DIESEL. Now, she’s showing what she can do purely on her own terms. Alice recently premiered her newest foray in music, a self-written Japanese song entitled “Princess of Manifestation” that’s not nearly as dark as it seems—it sparks and lights up with as much sugar and spice as you’d expect from J-Pop classics, a proud accomplishment for her debut single.

True to her New York state of mind, the song was born and bred by life in the city, and specifically, the East Village. "I was born in China but New York raised me. I see East Village cool kids dressed in their own fashions walking on the street. Madonna used to live in East Village before she became famous," she remarked. "It is 100% 'made to happen by New York, and that’s what I feel proud of the most. I wrote the lyrics and composed the melody. My group of musician friends Fern Souza of JIL and Danae Greenfield really helped me to put everything together and finish it on time." While the song is based in NYC, she says, "It is clearly powered by all the J-pop I have listened to since I was 10."

Not one to stray from her roots in the performance art world, "Princess of Manifestation" will also serve as the inspiration for her next art installation, 急にアイドル?! (English: “I am going to pursue to be an ‘Aidoru’ out of blue?!"). "For this piece, I will start with age-discrimination," she explains. "My plan is to build a bubble-gum color live stage. I will stream the 3D video I am currently making with Chilean designer Maria Teresa Aravena. I have been training in dance to make this video. At my installation, people will enter a universe that doesn’t contain the idea of 'time.' It will be pure joy, better than any drugs." Listen to the track here and see if you get the same drug-less high yourself.
