“All The Girls To The Front”, Bikini Kill Returns

With Kathleen Hanna back at its helm, Bikini Kill is ready to wreak havoc through music as it did during its prime.

The original Rebel Grrrl, Kathleen Hanna, is back for a string of US shows this spring with the iconic Riot Grrrl band, Bikini Kill.

Lead singer Hanna and her bandmates, guitarist Billy Karren, bassist Kathi Wilcox and drummer Tobi Vail, had a phenomenal impact on the youth of the 90s, particularly young women and queer kids. The band tackled feminism, gender politics and the hypocrisy of the patriarchy, both in the male-dominated music industry and in life.

Bikini Kill spearheaded the Riot Grrrl movement and its musical style and aesthetic that influenced so many. The band was signed to the legendary indie label Kill Rock Stars and had international success with two albums. It also completed a mini world tour and worked with rock legend, Joan Jett. The band split in 1997, but frontwoman Hanna went on to find success with solo projects like her album Julie Ruin and feminist, post-punk band Le Tigre before taking a musical hiatus in the mid 00s. In 2010, Hanna returned with The Julie Ruin, her new band (named after her 1997 album) with four others including Kathi Wilcox, original member of Bikini Kill.

Almost 29 years later, the seminal 90s band Bikini Kill is back together and will be touring the States and Europe this April through June, playing shows in Brooklyn, LA and London.

To celebrate the upcoming tour we take a look at the band’s biggest and best hit ‘Rebel Girl’. You can watch the music video below.
