Aluna Takes Us to the Renaissance on New Video for “The Recipe”

The song was produced with KAYTRANADA and features singer-songwriter Rema

If you’re tired of 2020, join Aluna on her trip back in time with her new music video for “The Recipe.” The song, made with KAYTRANADA, features the singer browsing through an evening dinner gala and dancing with the guests.

Nigerian singer-songwriter Rema provides a guest verse on the track, which blends Afrobeats with a steady percussion. As the singer proclaims her power on giving someone “the recipe” on the track, she wields that power as she prances through the video with several guests, jumping from one to another.

The video features an all-black cast, an intentional and powerful aspect. Aluna herself expressed that, saying, “I wanted to play with the way history has been dictated to us. Growing up in England you are constantly exposed to glamorous white history of period dramas without a black person in sight. I feel that since the British Empire was so heavily funded by slavery that history is ours too, we’ve just never been pictured in the finery…and I wanted to see what that would look like.”

The video was directed by Reggie., a director duo consisting of Clay Dirkse and Jake Herman. “This video brings together a lot of elements that you wouldn’t necessarily find in one place, but when combined create something magical,” they said. “We drew inspiration from Aluna’s album name, Renaissance, the Elizabethan era, dancehall, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Busby Berkely, the Wiz and more. We were very fortunate to collaborate with an incredible cast and crew. Our choreographer Chris Emile, captured the energy of the song and the idea perfectly.”

“The Recipe” comes from Aluna’s debut solo album, Renaissance, which has been out since August 28, 2020. Watch the music video below:
