Anna of the North Teases a New Single Ahead of her Sophomore Album

“I find it really head to write happy music in comparison than sad music”, explained Anna of the North as she sat down with V magazine to discuss her latest work.

The Norwegian born, Oslo-based singer and songwriter Anna of the North has taken her soul-bearing tracks and angelic, near choir-like voice and created something fresh, new and lyrically thrilling. Her undeniable talent has resulted in collaborations with Frank Ocean, Rejjie Snow, Steve Lacy and Tyler the Creator, whilst her debut album Lovers has passed the 200 million mark for international streams. Her much-awaited sophomore album will be releasing this fall, but ahead of the release she teases her fans with her latest single; ‘Playing Games.” A track which narrates her having the upper hand in a relationship.

“Love and relations stand at the forefront of my lyrics, not necessarily just the romantic ones, but also the ones you have to everyone and everything in your surroundings”, said Anna. Her music looks to the many facets of nostalgia and melancholia through soft hymns and light electronic melodies. “I find writing melodies before lyrics first hard, there are so many ways you can sing a word and change its meaning through a melody, so I always try to work with lyrics first.”

Norway’s music scene is on the rise, the country is primarily known for black metal and 80s synth-pop legends a-ha, however in more recent years the country has gotten an increased amount of international interest with its long list of rising pop talents. “The Norwegian music scene is crazy bananas, there are so many talented new artists popping up, it feels amazing to be in an environment that promotes new talent and has an open platform for new talent. Sweden used to be Scandinavia’s epicenter for pop music for a really long time – I feel like that has slowly shifted towards Norway”, finishes Anna.
