Next year, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London will mount an exhibition dedicated to the designs of Balenciaga. The showing, entitled Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion, will celebrate the work and legacy of Cristóbal Balenciaga, 100 years after he opened his fashion house in San Sebastian.

The exhibition will highlight the designer and house’s creative process with sketches, personal photographs, and fabric swatches. Many runway pieces from past collections will be on display, including 100 garments and 20 hats. The exhibition will also feature unseen pieces from the museum’s permanent collection.

The announcement comes at an interesting transitional time for Balenciaga. Newly appointed creative director, Vetements head designer, Demna Gvalsalia, has taken the fashion house in a bold new direction, basing his debut Fall 2016 collection on neon color blocking, fabulously oversized shoulder pads, and Spandex. The retrospective exhibition places attention back on Balenciaga’s roots and the original Cristóbal designs that shaped the house into the legendary name it has become today.

Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion opens on May 27, 2017, at the Victoria and Albert Museum and runs until February 18, 2018.
