Balmain’s Capsule Voyage Begs to ‘Take Us Away’

The French house champions heritage codes while making a foray on lux loungewear.

The double-breasted, seriously shouldered, PB monogrammed jacquard uniform of Olivier Rousteing’s Balmain coterie tipped into the halting casualization of fashion earlier this week, debuting Spring/Summer 2021’s Voyage Collection.

It’s track trousers and funnel neck crops, unfussy and unassuming, the gratin of travel wear courting us all out of lockdown and back en route.

Yilan Hua leans into an embossed velvet bra and matching pipestems alongside Braien Vaiksaar, balancing storied heritage codes atop the lean, languid shapes of today’s lounge push. Elsewhere, Balmain’s blason, updated under the gimlet eyes of Rousteing, is stitched into the top corners of this season’s calf grazing housecoats and ribbed knits, hedged upward by bare midriffs and complimented against house gilded hardware – pivoting heritage ballads into something current, a bit impish.

Truncated tops and columns of leisurewear drag to the ground in a fantasia of stately, sartorial ease, turning the indulgent louche glamour of the Balmain Army to the unstilted languor of transit-wear – allowing the French house to become covetable, even wearable, in all corners of life.
