Barbie and Ken Wear Jean-Charles De Castelbajac

Mattel brought the Barbie franchise into the French designer’s playful world
Mattel Creations, a name famously tied to the Barbie franchise, has brought the platinum blonde doll into the colorful world of French fashion designer and artist Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. Known for his playful approach to design, Castelbajac has long blurred the lines between fashion and art. Among his most recognizable creations is the teddy bear coat he first introduced in 1987, which now finds new life on collectible Barbie and Ken dolls.
Along with the multicolored teddy bear coat, Barbie wears a T-shirt dress featuring artwork reminiscent of Castelbajac’s paintings, finished with a pair of denim boots. Ken takes on the designer’s signature style in a similar teddy bear coat rendered in ivory, paired with a T-shirt and jeans. The collaboration extends beyond the dolls themselves, with both collectibles arriving in boxes embellished with Castelbajac’s distinctive drawings.
Mattel created the collaboration to encourage a merging of art and fashion, and there are few designers better suited to the task. Castelbajac has always brought a sense of playfulness and color to his work, making Barbie a natural canvas for his imagination. Here, the iconic doll steps fully into his world, surrounded by vibrant colors and a sense of joy. The result is a celebration of fashion, fun, and art.

“Working with Barbie and Ken offered a unique opportunity to bring together two worlds built on imagination and creativity. By creating these powerful looks inspired by my career, I wanted to invite Barbie and Ken into my playful and colorful universe, to celebrate art and fashion,” said Jean-Charles de Castelbajac.
