Barneys’ Latest Capsule is New York Strong

“The dynamic fusion of two brands.”

After nearly a year in limbo, New York based fashion label KROST picks up the story of Barneys New York, the longstanding archetype of city girl cool. Unveiling their limited-edition capsule collection amidst further headwinds of Covid-19, they find respite in a celebration of the past, present and future of their city that continues to navigate new territory in the thick of the virus. The collaboration trades on a fixed NYC heritage, marrying the historic codes tacit in any Barneys tie-up to KROST’s street minimalism, that seems just as contemporary as it is referential.

“The Barneys New York x KROST collaboration highlights the dynamic fusion of two brands; one rich with symbolic heritage and one with modern tones,” said Natasha Fishman, executive vice president of marketing at Authentic Brands Group, owner of Barneys New York. “Barneys is a destination known for its unique collaborations and we are excited to continue this tradition with a partner dedicated to uplifting the spirit of NYC.”

In a bid to keep Barney’s storied roots at the fore, the capsule’s ad campaign, shot by Sophia Wilson, was a Steven Meisel redux, one playing off the era of Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista – it is a boon of simplicity that colors our hindsight, one perhaps resurrected with feathered fascinators and the throes of steadying a house of cards. A clutch of fleece trousers, cityscape tees, and French terry hoodies makes for a failsafe collection even amidst tempered consumer demand.

And it’s one with good optics making ‘Rio Red’ hues and logo-ed embroidery ever the more palatable. Barneys New York x KROST has partnered with The Food Bank for New York City, working to end food poverty in the five boroughs, and One Warm Coat, an initiative providing free coats to those in need as winter slowly turns the city. The capsule has pledged to allot 2,400 coats and 800 meals along the holiday season.

As of today, the collection is live on KROST’s website and Basic.Space; it can be shopped at Barneys Japan, and Selfridges London.
