“Basics by Armani” Returns in Black and White

A|X revives its early-’90s tagline in a campaign photographed by Mark Lukas Savage
More than thirty years after its debut, Basics by Armani has returned to A|X Armani Exchange. Introduced in the early 1990s, the tagline described the label in plain terms: the Armani aesthetic adapted for everyday life. Its revival returns to the same question in the present: What does Armani look like when designed around the person wearing it?
A|X began in New York with a straightforward idea: bring Armani into everyday life. The clothes were less formal and easier to move in, while retaining the clean lines of the house. Reviving Basics by Armani returns the label to that early premise, allowing the wearer, not the occasion, to determine how the clothes look.

Photographed by Mark Lukas Savage, the campaign gives that relationship a clear visual structure. The studio is bare, the tones are neutral, and the portraits alternate between color and black and white. Without props to assign a role or scenery to establish context, posture and expression distinguish each subject.
The visual reference comes from A|X and Armani campaigns of the 1990s and early 2000s. Savage adopts their direct approach without reproducing their period styling. The archive functions as a method, not a costume, allowing familiar codes to appear in images made for the present.
