BBC Commissions New Amy Winehouse Documentary

Her nearest and dearest to share new insight into the late singer’s life and career

July 2021 will mark 10 years since the death of the inimitable British musician. In honor of the late songstress’ life and legacy, BBC Two and BBC music announce an Amy Winehouse documentary entitled, Amy Winehouse: 10 Years On. The film will offer a behind-the-scenes window into her life, through a rare public appearance from her mother, Janis Winehouse.

“I don’t feel the world knew the true Amy, the one I brought up,” said Janis Winehouse. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to offer an understanding of her roots and a deeper insight into the real Amy.”

Suffering from Multiple Sclerosis which threatens her long-term memory, Janis Winehouse was motivated to show the world her Amy, and immortalize her memories on film before her illness progresses too far.

In her mere twenties, Winehouse made a staggering impact on the music industry with two critically acclaimed albums, ‘Frank’ and ‘Black to Black.’ The latter of which led to five Grammy Awards, including Best Pop Vocal Album and Best New Artist, with its leading single, “Rehab,” spending 20 weeks in the US charts. Struggling with alcohol and drug abuse for years, the singer died in her north London home on July 23, 2011, at age 27.

This isn’t the first documentary to be made on Winehouse—Asif Kapadia’s 2015 film “Amy,” won the Oscar for best documentary feature at the 88th Academy Awards.  Although, the new 60-minute special promises to be fresh with unseen footage and pictures of Winehouse, reinterpreting the prevailing narrative around Amy Winehouse rise and fall, told by those deemed closest to her.

Amy Winehouse: 10 Years On, a working title, will be released later this year.

The feature fits into a larger plan to celebrate Winehouse’s life across TV, iPlayer, BBC Sounds, and BBC radio. Other projects include compiling an Artist Collection of her music, a documentary on how she influenced the generation of musicians which proceeded her, revisiting the musician’s most-loved performances.
