Billie Eilish Ignites Tour With a Letter to Body Shamers

The 2020 Grammy Award sensation began her world tour ‘Where Do We Go?’ on Monday in Miami.

Billie Eilish, the 18 year-old pop star who’s changing what it means to be one, made waves the first night of her tour by playing a video addressed to her critics. While the video played, Eilish gradually removed all her clothing until she was sinking into a dark pool in only her bra.

“If what I wear is comfortable, I am not a woman. If I shed the layers, I am a slut,” reads a transcription of the video from The Guardian. “Though you’ve never seen my body, you still judge it and judge me for it.”

As more of pop music’s finest protest traditional and restricting beauty standards, like Lizzo, Eilish remains open about her struggles with critics’ perception. An ad campaign for Calvin Klein last year saw Eilish elaborating on her baggy wardrobe decisions, where she said, “I mean, that’s why I wear big, baggy clothes—nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath, you know?”
