Billie Eilish Lays it All Bare on “Your Power”

The singer releases a new track and video after announcing her second studio album

Billie Eilish officially begins the countdown to her second studio album with the release of “Your Power,” the third single. She manages to ring it in not only with a single drop, but also a music video.

The song, co-written with FINNEAS, is an acoustic guitar-driven ballad that details a troubled relationship. Eilish sings off someone who’s unable to understand how abusive the power they hold is and why they continue to hurt the other person in the relationship. It’s a melancholic tune, with some signature sonorous vocal effects, with lyrics like, “Try not to abuse your power/I know we didn’t choose to change.

Ever since the music video became an art form, it’s oftentimes the case that they won’t relate to the song much. But this Eilish directorial venture, like many of her previous ones, beats the curve by keeping it authentic to the song’s message. Shot in California’s Simi Valley, the landscape shots and Eilish’s wardrobe are reduced to dull shades of brown to keep everything monotone. Eilish sings alone before being joined by an 80lb anaconda. With each passing lyric, the anaconda continues to constrict her, reflecting the suffocation of the relationship the song is about.

The song is the third single off of Eilish’s upcoming studio album, Happier Than Ever, slated to be released on July 30, 2021 as the follow-up to her record-breaking debut, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? The song follows November’s “Therefore I Am” and “My Future,” released exactly a year prior to the album’s release date.
