Our mystical yet always reliable art pop wunderkind, Björk, has returned with a new single, “The Gate.” And after taking listeners on a tumultuous journey through the destruction of her 13-year relationship on her previous studio album Vulnicura, it seems that the Icelandic sensation is ready to embrace love once again.

Written and produced with constant collaborator Arca, “The Gate” sees Björk take on a much more natural soundscape, with calming woodwinds, acoustic strings, and harps complimenting the artist’s inimitable vocals this time around. While Arca’s sparse electronic keystones are still present, they seem to serve as the slight tinge of darkness on this track, as if Björk is still hesitant to feel light in her life completely — a warning sign that things may still go south.

But Björk has never been one to only be half-dedicated to a theme or concept, and her light is shining through better than ever. “I care for you,” she pleads repeatedly throughout the seven-minute masterpiece as the track gradually soars into a crescendo of chimes and stuttering vocals, reminiscent of an 1800s classical composition. She doesn’t reach all-out catharsis quite yet, but she’s damn close.

Listen to “The Gate” below, and pre-order her upcoming album Utopia now.
