Blumarine’s Fall/Winter ’21 Collection Is A Nod to Y2K Freshness

Inspired by Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and the bold trends of the early 2000s, the collection is a flirty and sexy line of nostalgia.

Y2K goodness saturates Blumarine’s Fall/Winter ‘21 collection, a line of ultra-flirty, ultra-feminine, ultra-short looks inspired by the likes of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

In a slumber party-esque digital fashion show, models transition from a hot pink room to the runway—brushing each others’ hair and licking their own reflections in the mirror leads to fierce catwalk struts in flashy, kitschy, vibrant garments to a fast-paced, electric beat.

With the Fall/Winter ‘21 collection, Blumarine invites the ‘90s and early 2000s into their house and makes it sexy instead of tacky, cool and chic instead of dated. It is where high fashion meets trendy streetwear—the result being a line of truly cool, glamorous pieces, with fine tailoring and attention to detail elevating them beyond everyday suburbia, glamorizing decades-past trends into romantic modern pieces.

The collection is woven with 2000s It-Girl inspiration throughout. Bold blues and shades of hot pink are the core of the color palette, while vivid shades of canary yellow and muted beige complement the intense hues. Texture is at the mercy of creative director Nicola Brognano, who plays with thick, fuzzy fur and contrasts it with delicate, sheer embellished fabric, mixing silhouettes and drapery to find a fine balance between a gala evening and a club evening, dressed up and dressed down.

Taking cues from early 2000s trends—low rise bottoms, fitted tops, impossibly short skirts and dresses make numerous appearances—the standout pieces across the collection are those which most boldly and gracefully adapt the past two decades into the contemporary moment, making the collection wearable for now rather than simply a nostalgic nod to the past.

Exaggeratedly oversized fur coats with wide lapels define a bulky, chic silhouette; a gauzy cream mini dress with silver embellishments on the sheer fabric brings to mind a nightclub in 2006, a Hilton on one side of the booth and a Kardashian on the other; a long-sleeved cyan crop top with black fur trim on the collar and a matching mini skirt is a nod to put-togetherness, a reminder that campy doesn’t need to be synonymous with tacky

Accessories in the collection adhere to the Y2K uniform, too: a large butterfly motif is seen throughout, on belt buckles and chokers, while dramatically oversized fuzzy hoop earrings and impossibly high stilettos and Kangol-esque hats tie each ensemble together from head to toe.
