Earbuds are supposed to go inside your ear, right? Well, Bose wants to challenge that idea. Announcing its first collaboration with a fashion brand, Bose has teamed up with Kith for the Kith for Bose Ultra Open Earbuds. Having been known as one of the go-to brands for anything audio since 1964, it makes total sense why Bose would partner with Kith, the growing brand that’s made a splash as one of the leading retailers and lifestyle brands in recent times.
Upon opening, the intimidating yet exciting unique earbud design breaks away from the conventional in-ear style, as the audio component hooks onto the outer ear, while a secure loop wraps around the back for stability, eliminating the discomfort associated with prolonged use and the notorious sore ear that comes with earbuds.
With that being said, the Ultra Open Earbuds are surprisingly secure, even during intense movements such as headbanging or jumping or, even, an overnight flight—tried and true. Although an unfamiliar sensation at first, the design ensures a snug and worry-free experience. With a relatively easy setup, thanks to a dedicated app that guides users through the process, the app assists in proper placement and also offers customization options, not to mention giving you names to choose from or the option to personalize the name. The in-app walk-through demonstrates shortcuts via the earbuds, such as a double press on one side adjusts the volume as users can add their personalized shortcuts.
A standout feature is the immersive audio function, offering two modes: still immersive audio, which simulates the sound emanating from the phone and can be sensed behind the user, and motion immersive audio, which maintains the immersive experience regardless of movement. Although the app does not show you the number percentage of the case, a light indicator on the case notifies you when it needs to be recharged—though a 24-hour travel day did not make a dent in the battery. The device excels in its longevity, providing extended use without compromising performance.
While the innovative design prevents ear soreness, it’s worth mentioning that, similar to over-the-ear headphones, the external audio may be faintly audible to those nearby. However, this is a minor inconvenience compared to the overall comfort and performance offered by these Bose and Kith earbuds—and unbeatable style, of course.
The headphones are now available for $300 in limited quantities exclusively on Kith.com and in select Kith stores.
