Broad City has returned for what is sure to be a dynamite season 4. The premier, entitled Sliding Doors, is an unhinged chronicle of a day in two ways. The show expertly shifts from one scenario to another, after Ilana uses her last Metro Card swipe on Abbi. They meet for the first time and from there, the episode teeters back and forth between what happens when they make the train, and what happens when they don’t.

When they miss the train, they spend a magical day together, reveling in the boundless possibilities of 2011. In this world, they bond over Ilana’s brash humor, Abbi’s revelation that she is Jewish, to Ilana’s disbelief, and spend the day living like it’s their last after a psychic prophesizes they will die that very day. They do, in fact get hit by a bus.

In the make-the-train scenario, they pleasantly go their separate ways, each to have a marvelously horrible day in which Abbi’s ponytail is clipped off, Ilana loses her job and angers her roommates (she nicknames all three girls Madison), and Abbi embarks on a solo fro-yo outing, which is sad in and of itself. By the day’s end, they meet up, and write their names in wet cement, as if to cement their burgeoning friendship.

If viewers were hoping for a spark of maturity to hit either character, finally tethering them to a greater sense of reality, they will be disappointed. But that’s probably not what their audience is expecting. Both Ilana and Abbi will doubtless continue on their demented adventures throughout New York City, laughing in the face of maturity. If past shenanigans are any indication (poop in shoes, anaphylactic shock, mistaken terrorism en route to Israel), Season 4 will be just as raucous, riddled with hijinks in the typical millennial way. Abbi and Ilana have become a generation symbol for young urbanites trying to make it. If the Season 4 premier tells viewers anything, it’s that they still haven’t made it. But they’ll keep trying and have fun while they do it.
