Blumarine’s Spring/Summer 2022 Collection Reconstructs the Y2K Uniform
Creative Director Nicola Brognano’s campy collection modernizes nostalgic silhouettes.
Infused with unabashed glamour and nods to Y2K aesthetics, Blumarine’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection continues the brand’s buzzy revival while also offering updated silhouettes to the label’s budding lexicon.
Since his arrival at the helm of the Italian house, Creative Director Nicola Brognano’s intricate and kitschy designs have attracted a high-profile list of clientele like Rihanna, Ariana Grande, and Dua Lipa. By incorporating nods to the brand’s storied past and toying with a Y2K craze that has inundated social media, Brognano has cemented himself as one to watch during Milan Fashion Week.
With Spring/Summer 2022, Blumarine’s 2000s It-Girl archetype opted for an updated version of the brand’s usual flirty separates. Standout pieces like printed low-rise trousers, ruffle mini dresses, and cropped cardigans again proved Brognano’s unrivaled knack for repackaging feel good trends of decades past for the modern eye.
Set against the catchy lyrics of the Y2K mega-hit “Milkshake,” models donned in tempting silhouettes and all-over body glitter appeared as if they were plucked directly from the early 2000s. Accessories-wise, Brognano toyed with tinted sunglasses, mini shoulder bags, and oversized logo belts—fads all reminiscent of the heyday of socialites like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.
Though the brand is notorious for muted pastel hues, the Italian creative embeds a range of toned-down color ways throughout the collection. Mixed in with neon yellow skirt sets and glitzy embroidery are laid back pieces like chocolate utility pants and slouchy graphic t-shirts that certainly broaden the brand’s already diehard audience.
Texture continued to be at the forefront of the label’s sharp DNA, too. As with seasons prior, Brognano showcases campy textiles like silver fringe, fur trims, and chiffon printed to resemble denim. By combining early aughts excess with Gen Z backed trends, Brognano is both tapping into a shared love for nostalgia while also churning out must-have pieces that are undoubtedly modern.
Ranging from skimpy looks like sheer powder pink dresses to streetwear-inspired track pants, Blumarine’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection has the perfect Y2K silhouette for every occasion. And though the brand is drawn to the aesthetics of previous decades, the collection feels wholly relevant given the rising prominence of archival silhouettes and much embraced reemergence of pop-culture It girls.
