Burberry à la Beach

Spring Summer 2023 marks a season of contrast for the luxury brand, where tailored tradition meets a sensual sea

A summer adorned in Burberry is color-drenched and denim-clad, lively with a playful seaside air in yet another season of sartorial fundamentals. Brimming with layered tulle and weightless lace, voluminous silhouettes made way for elegant silks across a warehouse runway this London Fashion Week, looks contrasting the industrial space with heritage prints and varied spring hues.

A celebration of beach and body, this recent collection boasts men and womenswear of ample inspiration, from ultra-feminine evening gowns to shark-toothed rings and goggle-like accessories. “I was inspired by the liberation and openness of youth,” says Riccardo Tisci, Chief Creative Officer of Burberry. “A pride in themselves, who they are, [and] their identities.”

From sparkling lingerie atop a cutout bodysuit to a structured vest trench in shades of grey, the luxury brand shows an experimental edge alongside nods to tradition, with juxtaposition largely present in their recent display. Where softened menswear in twisted T-shirts and relaxed trousers meets sharp collars and ties, womenswear sees both structured coats and sensual slips in dreamy shades of lotus pink and marigold.

The Burberry Catherine and Lola bags, along with flotation-like arm bands, accompanied looks down the runway, enhancing both classic visuals and beachside themes. “[The beach] is where people from all cultures can join together in simple pleasures,” Tisci says of the collection, crediting the summer escape for its influence on all people despite their differences. “This feels modern, this feels right, and this feels Burberry.”
