Burberry Explores Duality With Spring/Summer 2021 Collection

The latest installment shows off the brand’s versatility.

A love affair between a mermaid and a shark? Stranger things have happened. For its Spring/Summer 2021 campaign, Burberry marries contradicting themes of natural and manmade, future and nostalgia, and even surprising romantic entanglements to showcase the brand’s latest collection.

Titled “In Bloom,” the installment’s video companion incorporates a variety of artistic perspectives and viewpoints, shifting from sterile studio footage to vivid nature scenes. Runway regulars He Cong and Anok Yai, along with other models, brought the collection to life.

The theme of dichotomies is exemplified in the collection’s garments. Juxtaposing materials like rugged denim and wispy tulle, structured leather, and intricate crystal embellishments create a blend of texture. Chainmail-like gems gave an edge to sheer cocktail dresses.

Burberry’s classic trench is updated with on-theme color blocking, accenting the traditional tan with swaths of denim. The collection weaves together street style, simple basics, and eye-catching eveningwear. A standout from the menswear included a luxe leather and canvas parka in contrasting black and white, the collar popped to highlight a grey visor and fisherman’s hat.

“I have always been inspired by the concept of duality, so it was amazing to see the unique energy and dynamic tension that was found in the fusion of all these worlds,” said Burberry chief creative officer Riccardo Tisci. “This campaign is all about continuing that examination of different perspectives, contrasting the rawness of the internal environment with the ever-blooming nature of the outdoors.”
