Burberry’s Autumn 2024 collection aims to draw inspiration from British culture, encompassing its archetypes, iconography, and diverse populace, according to the collection notes. While the specifics remain open to interpretation, a noticeable nod to the British punk rock scene is apparent, although not fully eclipsed throughout the collection, as well as a prevailing essence around military influences, as silhouettes cascade generously off the models for looks that keep ease in mind.

We can’t go any further without talking about the shoes of the collection. The baggy theme of the collection transcends through the shoes—the knee-high boots featuring a buckle on the front slouch into ripples and many of the loafers feature a bulbous toe. The star of the shoes—the furry heels—begged the question if one should applaud the shock value and experimentation or critique the practicality of the design. 

Burberry revamps their iconic motif, the Burberry Check, for this collection, as an introduction of distressed colors like red, black, grays, and muted teal in the check pattern adorns entire garments and accents coats on collars and sleeves. From neutral tones to vibrant reds and yellows, the collection offers a diverse color palette. Seasonal micro prints, such as post boxes and a bird’s eye view of a double-decker bus, feature British iconography.

Many highlights of the collection are rooted in the more subversive and punk tones of the collection. Zippers placed in unique locations inject excitement, such as a deconstructed pleated skirt with a revealing slit secured by a waist zipper. Overcoats featuring the Burberry check elevate practicality and freshness. A denim set featuring rip-away pants and a cross-zippered, belted jacket adds a touch of uniqueness and versatility. 

The collection elicits both admiration and criticism, reflecting a dichotomy of sentiments. Regardless of the varied reactions, Daniel Lee’s creative direction has and continues to mark a significant shift in innovation, affording the brand the freedom to explore new avenues.
